Swami Trigunatitananda doubted the existence of ghosts. He visited some haunted houses in the hope of seeing ghosts, but he was unsuccessful. Someone told him that at a certain house in Baranagar, ghosts can be seen at midnight. Without telling anyone, he went there before midnight and waited for the ghost. Suddenly he saw a faint light appear in the corner of the room. The light grew brighter and there appeared an eye at the centre. It approached him with deadly malevolence. The Swami felt his blood dry up in his veins and his body withering fast in the sinister light of that eye. He was about to faint. Immediately Sri Ramakrishna appeared.
Holding his hand, the Master said: "My child, why are you so foolishly taking chances with certain death? It is sufficient to keep your mind fixed on me." With those words the Master disappeared. His spirit at once revived and he left the house, his curiosity about ghosts satisfied forever.
Swami Trigunatitananda once found himself on the bank of a river with no way to cross except by walking over a ruined dam. He decided to cross the river by seeing the rocks by the moon light. When he reached the mid-stream, suddenly cloud hid the moon light and he was helpless in the pitch dark. One false step meant sure death. Suddenly he heard a voice: "Follow me."
He went forward. Before he knew it, he was already on firm ground on the other bank! Now the moon shone again but there was nobody around. He understood that the Master's grace and protection were still with him.
